5 things to know before buying motor insurance in Zambia

Third-party or comprehensive? What does excess really mean? Five things every driver should understand before choosing a motor policy.

Buying motor insurance in Zambia can feel overwhelming. There are several insurers in the market, each with its own products, rates and conditions, and the cheapest policy on paper is not always the one that serves you best when something goes wrong. Whether you own a single personal vehicle or manage a fleet for your business, here are five things you should understand before you sign.

1. Know the difference between third-party and comprehensive cover

Third-party insurance is the minimum cover required by law. It protects you against your legal liability for injuring other people or damaging their property — but it does nothing for your own vehicle. If you cause an accident, your car’s repairs are your own problem.

Comprehensive cover goes much further. In addition to third-party liability, it protects your own vehicle against accidental damage, fire and theft. For most vehicles of meaningful value, and certainly for any vehicle that is financed, comprehensive cover is the sensible choice. Third party, fire and theft sits in between and can suit older vehicles where full comprehensive cover is hard to justify.

2. Your no-claims discount is worth protecting

Many insurers reward claim-free driving with a no-claims discount that reduces your premium at renewal. Over several years this can add up to a substantial saving. Before switching insurers or making a small claim, ask your broker how it will affect your discount — sometimes paying for a minor repair yourself is the better long-term decision.

3. Understand your excess

The excess is the portion of every claim that you pay yourself before the insurer pays the balance. Policies often carry different excesses for different situations, such as theft, young or inexperienced drivers, or windscreen damage. A higher excess usually reduces your premium, but only choose one you could comfortably afford to pay on a bad day.

4. Disclose everything, honestly

Insurance is based on the principle of utmost good faith. If you fail to disclose a previous accident, a modification to your vehicle, or the fact that it is used for business purposes, the insurer may be entitled to reduce or reject your claim — precisely when you need it most. When in doubt, tell your broker. We will help you present the information accurately and find an insurer comfortable with your circumstances.

5. Use a licensed, independent broker

A licensed broker such as Symmetric Insurance Solutions works for you, not for an insurer. We compare policies across a panel of insurers, explain the differences in plain language, and recommend cover that actually fits your needs. And if you ever need to claim, we stand beside you through the process — from the first phone call to the final settlement.
